I suspect that's lifted from the Jazz Icons dvd of Blakey's Jazz Messengers
in Belgium from 1958. There is also a performance of "I Remember Clifford" on
the Jazz Icons dvd of Quincy Jones' Big Band from Belgium & Switzerland in
1960 that features the ever-wonderful Benny Bailey.
These are both dvd's that belong in any musicians' video library.
Especially considering that I read a brief article in the AFM's "International
Musician" indicating that the series' producers tracked down all surviving
musicians or their estates to ensure they received payment for the video releases.
In an industry rife with bean-counter greed (especially in jazz where we all
seem to think it should be "for free"), that's highly unusual. And deserving
of our $$ support.
Not to mention the vids are of high quality for European-filmed black
and white footage from the '50's. The sound is also wonderful. Again, if you
love the music, these should be considered "must-haves." I got my copies from
the Mosaic/True Blue website- they're very good, delivery is fast. But I've
also seen some of them in places like Barnes & Noble & Borders stores.
"I Remember Clifford" has a special place in my heart. My frosh year at
Syracuse, I was a liberal arts major. A group of students (with a faculty
advisor/conductor) started a Jazz Workshop big band. Among the pieces we somehow
got a hold of was an arrangement of "Clifford" (don't know whose). Since I
was the only guy in the section with a flugel (a Couesnon bought new in high
school- $165 in silver from NYC's Manny's, ahh, those WERE the days & yes I
still have it), I was picked to do the solo part. The night of the performance,
something- the "magic?"- happened. The next day I started the process of
transferring over to the Music School...
