I hope that was a joke!  Do not use steel wool on your valves!!!!

It will cost you about $400 to get that metal put back on your valves 
some day.

If they really need something beyond simple green and water I suggest 
you try Nevr-Dull.  It is metal cleaner and polish and does a nice job. 
  I use it on slides if they really need a good cleaning.
