Yes, never use steel wool on valves - use a rasp instead. Much faster and 
way more damage. But, as fun as that might be, try a little Brasso. Just 
massage it gently on the valve, let dry, and rinse really well. Works great 
on older horns. Just don't buff it out - use water to remove.
