Although the post has been about the 4th valve on A and B-flat picc, some
of you might have run into, or be interested in, a G picc with a
differently conceived 4th valve. Several years ago (seems like nearly
everything is "several years ago" now) a colleague was trying to buy a G
picc to use on the Vivaldi 2-tpt concerto. Schilke was months and months
out and Bach said that they were in the same situation, but I
called Lloyd Fillio at Bach who "investigated" the storerooms and found
two Paris Selmer trumpets in G that were not listed or accounted for
anywhere in the Bach/Selmer inventory. The 4th valve tubing on those
little guys was exactly the same as the first valve. My friend bought
one of the instruments, and that odd 4th valve was useful in making
certain trills better and gave certain tuning options -- kind of a quick
change to F.
