Reading this thread makes me begin to think that artists out there don't
understand the merits of getting off your own tail to make a scene. I
spend at least 45 minutes a day hustling work, and do to being committed to
making my scene work in my area have a very healthy performing schedule.
It's not always about practicing more than the next guy. It's about working
hard enough to network and research every possibility out there. Be it a
retirement party for a horse (yep, played that gig), a ship's christening
(then 20 mins later the ship sank, I got paid in advance), or playing at
Symphony Hall there's work. Wouldn't we all loved it if someone handed
us every gig? ha... those days are long gone but if you work the music
will be all around you for the taking.

CT told me that I would always be able to work in any city I chose if I
worked hard enough. He said this to me:

"Just remember there's an ass for every seat".

Now that phrase (as PG-13 as you want to take it) has a great deal of
meaning (and multiple interpretations). Yesterday at my university I was a
panelist about arts entrepreneurship. Trust me, there's outreach work and
grants out there for anyone committed enough to bust their tails to work.

Looking forward to more replies on this thread.
