Dave,

I've talked to a lot of older players who do say that the personalities of trumpet players have been weeded out somehow over the years and the CSO/Herseth phenomenon is a significant part of it. It seems as though everyone wanted to sound like Herseth over the last several decades. He is obviously one of the finest if not the finest orchestral player of his generation, even of all time but there are lots of ways to sound. Will the pendulum ever swing back the other way where style and personality are given the same value as "clean, clam free"(safe) trumpet playing?

> I am amazed at the narrow choice of orchestral playing there Mark - what about the Russian School, the German/Austrian tradition, the British school e.g. Maurice Murphy? Admittedly Herseth is an outstanding player, but there have been others on the planet too who have made/are making their mark. I think one would do oneself a disservice only listening the the CSO.> > ________________________________________________________________________> David McNaughtan · Principal Trumpet, Philharmonisches Orchester Landestheater Coburg> McNaughtan Publishing · www.mcnaughtan.com> > > ----- Original message ----------------------------------------> From: "Mark Minasian" <minasiand001 at hawaii.rr.com>> To: TPIN <tpin at tpin.okcu.edu>> Received: 15.03.2008 07:37:00> Subject: Re: [TPIN] essential listening> > > > >1 Reiner/Chicago Pictures at an Exibition ( also, if you can find > >it, the Kubelick recording which is the earliest recording of Herseth > >and features Arnold Jacobs performing the Bydlo solo on a large BBb > >tuba )> > >2 Reiner/Chicago Scheherazade> > >3 Reiner/Chicago Ein Heldenlieben> > >4 Reiner/Chicago Also Sprach Zarathustra> > >5 Reiner/Chicago Pines of Rome> > >6 Arnold Jacobs: Portrait of an Artist > >http://www.amazon.com/Portrait-Artist-Arnold-Bela-Bartok/dp/B00004UDEY/ref=sr_> >1_57?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1205560476&sr=1-57> > >7Arnold Jacobs: Legacy of an Artist > >http://www.amazon.com/Legacy-Artist-Arnold-Jacobs/dp/B000KX0HPA/ref=pd_bxg> >y_m_text_b> > >8 Carlo Maria Giulini, the Chicago Recordings > >http://www.amazon.com/Chicago-Recordings-Ludwig-van-Beethoven/dp/B0001ZMB> >V0/ref=sr_1_46?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1205560762&sr=1-46> _______________________________________________> TPIN mailing list> TPIN at tpin.okcu.edu> http://tpin.okcu.edu/mailman/listinfo/tpin
