1955 was the first real glimmer of rock and roll. Chuck Berry did Mayblene in 1955 and Roll Over Beethoven in 1956. Elvis did Hound Dog in 1956. You could do some of the instrumental tunes from those early groups like Bill Hailey's Rock Around The Clock.
For the early 1950's check out the singers, i.e. Rosemary Clooney with "Papa Loves Mambo", Patti Page with "Tennessee Waltz", Peggy Lee with "Black Coffee" and "Fever", Billy Holiday with "Mean to Me", Frank Sinatra just about anything, Tony Benett with just about anything, Nat King Cole with just about anything. And don't forget Brother Ray Charles with "Mess Around", "Drown in my Own Tears", "Night Time is the Right Time" and "I Can't Stop Lovin' You".
Some other tunes from the 1950's that will play well are "La Vie En Rose", "Little Darlin'", "Love Letters in the Sand", "Night Train", "Patricia,It's Patricia", "Oye Como Va", "Three Coins in the Fountain", "Unforgettable".
Also, remember that latin music from the New York mambo bands was very popular with Prez Prado, Tito Puente, Xavier Cugat, Mario Bouza, and Machito.
That should give you enough to choose from Jon.
