Seeing that tune name pop up reminds me of a 20 year ago quintet gig for confederate memorial day in Cartersville, GA:
We didn't have quite enough civil war tunes at that time so I had pulled the Doug Smith arrangement of Kingsfold since it has that four-square sort of English hymn tune feel and sounded right for the period.
After the program the governor's father thanked the group and mentioned that he had recognized all the tunes except one. The tuba player quickly made up a title and some lyrics that seemed to fit, smoothing over the awkward moment and my stuttering explanation!
Since then I have learned that the Kingsfold tune has been used over and over again, including in a rock song, and is very similar to R. V. Williams treatment of "Dives and Lazarus" which can be found to pop up in the trumpet players' gem "English Folk Song Suite" (obligatory trumpet content!).
In fact I think one of the seminary music professors in Louisville did a paper about the tune, although I forget his name.
Back to work! TGIF!
