Assuming that you are speaking of a concert band situation, I changed mine every
year to accomodate the group's strengths and weaknesses. If the low brass were
weak, I'd seat them in the first or second row. If the flutes were overpowering,
I'd move them back a row or two. I always tried to have the section leaders near
the middle since my musical communication would be mostly with them.
One year, after I finished seating the band that way, I was surprised to find
that the three siblings in the group ended up right next to each other.
