The creator of the asymmetric mouthpiece, Mr. John Lynch, has a theory on "hand placement" and the functioning of the lips while producing a note that I agree with whole heartedly.

He suggests that the upper lip produces almost all of the vibrations used to produce sound
and the lower lip is an anchor point that also presses upward against the upper lip to restrict the vibration much the same as a finger presses a violin string and changes the pitch.

The lower hand position facilates more pressure on the lower lip and releases the pressure on the upper lip to allow a less restricted blow.

This technique allows a player to increase his endurance ten fold because the lower lip is much stronger being braced by the lower teeth thus allowing the upper lip to scream vibrations with less fatigue.(particularly in the upper ranges).

Please understand that these comments are derived as my understanding of John Lynch's words via a phone conversationa a few years back. He can explain it much better than my humble attempt.

And no! I don't play the assymmetrc designed MP. I play a custom Laskey with a Bach style 2 3/4C Rim and this concept works for me all the way up to A above double C.

Hello everyone,

as I sit here watching my Maynard Ferguson Tribute DVD, I can't help but
notice that when they show older pictures of him playing he is using the
'traditional' left hand positioning on the horn. BUT I noticed on my Maynard
Ferguson "Live at the Top" he holds his trumpet with the left hand wrapped
around the bottom of the vale casing. Any ideas as to why he switched?

Not sure why he did it but for me, I've changed my hand possition from
time to time. Just kinda ends up going with whatever feels better at the
time. I know Faddis likes to change his hand position a lot. Dunno,
whatever works I guess.
