Brian,
I am going through the same problems with my Giardinelli 5 series (I use 5B,
5C, 5M, or 5S depending on the job). The best solutions I can think of for
you are:
1) buy the 5B from Music 123, send it to along with your 5C to Vlad Fridman
at Dillon's and he'll fashion you a screw-rim 5C using the new rim and your
old bottom (about $40 + the cost of the other mpc). As a user of both the 5B
and 5C I vouch that the rims feel identical to me. Jim Becker at Osmun's can
do the work also.
2) just have Vlad or Jim repair the nick on your 5C ($25-ish).
3) send your 5C to Kanstul (via Charles Hargett who is a member of this
list) and have them duplicate it ( $130-ish). Many of the other mpc
manufacturers will do the same thing for you.
Someone may need to do a sanity check on my cost figures. The downside of
all of these solutions is that you'll be without your piece for a few weeks.
If you choose to go the #3 route, I'll be happy to send mine to them do the
CMM (coordinate measuring machine) scan of it, as I barely use the 5C these
days (I use that one pretty much only with D trumpet when I need to blend
with C's and Bb's).
Best,
Richard

The reason I am looking for a new mouthpiece is because my 5C has gotten a
nice, deep gash on the rim that makes it rather uncomfortable and because I
can't find a Giardinelli 5C to buy anywhere on the Internet.
Thanks again for your thoughts and suggestions!
Brian
