Add "angry wives" to that list of things it's a blessing NOT to hear... <ggg>
But on a more serious note: It's no joke about damage to hearing when playing loud venues. I've noticed reactions (insensitivity in hearing) following loud rock band gigs - it seems to recover after a day or two. It's worth it to wair a pair of noise filtering ear monitors, or at least "sonic" ear plugs in those sorts of venues. Doing so also helps avoid some of the "overplaying" that we call do, when trying to make the sound open up and "ring" at those volumes (regardless of sound monitors, sound-back disks, etc.).
